A&N Electric Cooperative recently hosted a first responder safety-training event for local fire and rescue personnel.
The event was held in late October at the cooperative’s Tasley headquarters and included an electric-safety presentation followed by several real-world emergency scenarios.
The scenarios included a downed power line on a vehicle, a damaged pad-mount transformer, a tree limb on a line, among others.
Cooperative personnel explained the hazards associated with each scenario and demonstrated how to make each area safe.
“The cooperative was happy to host some of our local first responders for this initial safety training event,” said Operations
Supervisor Virgil Wessells. “We want everyone to be aware of the potential hazards during emergency situations. This event allowed us to explain some unseen hazards and answer any questions our fire and rescue personnel might have when it comes to electric safety.”
Local first responders represented fire and rescue companies in Accomack and Northampton counties. The participants
included volunteers and paid fire personnel.
Another first responder training session is being planned for the spring.
