Co-op under normal operations, continues to monitor weather
A&N Electric Cooperative (ANEC) is under normal operations but will continue to monitor Hurricane Florence and local weather associated with the storm.
“We are very fortunate the storm’s path eventually took a more southern approach than initially anticipated,” said ANEC President and CEO Butch Williamson. “It looks like we will be spared from any severe impacts associated with this hurricane.”
The storm’s eye made landfall near Wilmington, North Carolina early Friday morning causing wide-spread power outages along the state’s coast and inland.
“We are watching the effects of the storm in North Carolina and are preparing to send mutual assistance to those areas affected by Florence once any potential issues with the storm have passed locally,” said Kelvin Petit, ANEC Vice President of Operations.
Our service area is expected to receive some wind gusts and minor tidal flooding associated with the storm, but the cooperative does not anticipate any widespread, extended power outages.
The cooperative encourages our members who collected hurricane supplies to keep any non-perishable items on hand throughout the duration of the hurricane season, which ends Nov. 1. Cooperative members who did not gather hurricane supplies for this storm are urged to start gathering supplies now to carry them through the remainder of the season.
“Those co-op members who prepared early for this storm should be applauded,” said Williamson. “Hurricane Florence had the potential to bring catastrophic damage into our area. It’s best to be cautious and plan ahead.”
Members are reminded that the cooperative’s SmartHub app is an easy way to report outages during severe weather. The app is free and is compatible with Apple and Android mobile devices. If a member hasn’t downloaded SmartHub yet, now is a good time.
Members are also reminded to ensure their phone numbers on file with the cooperative are up to date. The system ANEC uses to predict outages utilizes member phone records to help locate issues with the cooperative’s electrical distribution system. Out of date phone numbers listed on member accounts can impact that member’s ability to report an outage. If your phone number is different than the one originally associated with your ANEC account, please call our office at 757-787-9750, option 2, to update the information.
