Phone Scam Targets ANEC Customers
Some customers of A&N Electric Cooperative have reported a new type of phone scam where the customer receives a phone call asking them to call 1-877-432-9325 and make immediate payment on their electric bill to avoid disconnection. Although the caller ID may show this call is from ANEC, it is not. Additionally, the scammer has copied ANEC's phone greeting and menu, therefore the customer believes they are really calling ANEC.
When the customer calls back, they press 2 for the billing department and are connected to someone who demands payment with a prepaid card, threatening their power will be turned off immediately.
Please be on the alert for this scam. While ANEC may contact you by phone for various reasons, they will never call you to demand payment by a certain method or threaten an immediate disconnection of service if payment is not received.
Additionally, an ANEC employee will not call or visit you when the office is closed to request a payment or disconnect your service. If you have any doubt about a person's validity to represent ANEC, you should call ANEC immediately at 757-787-9750 or 1-800-431-2632 and an official ANEC representative will be glad to assist you.
Beware the 'Green Dot' Scam
We have received reports that people in A & N Electric Cooperative's service territory have been targeted by the "Green Dot" scam. Information from law enforcement officials and other utilities has indicated that "scammers" are targeting not only residents, but also commercial businesses.
What is the Green Dot Scam?
A scam artist will tell business owners that the location's electric service account is delinquent, and it will be shut off for non-payment, unless the business purchases a "Green Dot Money Pack" for a specific amount dictated by the scammer from particular stores. Victims are then given instructions to call the scammer's telephone number with the card's account number and pin. Once the "scammer" obtains the card's identifying information, the value is then downloaded, swept and stolen. These transactions are untraceable.
How you Can Protect Yourself
A & N Electric Cooperative, may from time to time contact members in person or via phone for various reasons. If someone claims to represent a company, whether it is ANEC or another entity, it is important that members take precautions to verify the person is affiliated with a legitimate firm, especially if that person is requesting an immediate monetary payment.
When addressing past due accounts, ANEC never specifies a specific payment. Instead, multiple payment options are always given to the member. A & N Electric Cooperative advises members to ask for official photo identification from any person who shows up at their door. Employees from reputable companies, such as ANEC, will carry official company identification cards. If proper identification cannot be produced, members should notify police and the company with whom the individual claims to be associated.
Similarly, if someone calls saying they represent a certain company, members should ask them to verify their identity and affiliation. If members have any doubt about the validity of a person's claim to represent ANEC, they should call the company immediately at 1-800-431-2632 and an official ANEC representative will gladly assist you.
